Khao Sok National Park is one of Thailand’s most extraordinary destinations – and one of the most underrated. Tucked between the better-known beach resorts of Koh Samui and Phuket, it rewards travellers who make the detour with some of the most spectacular jungle scenery in Southeast Asia.

We visited as part of our two-week Thailand family holiday, and it was genuinely one of the highlights of the entire trip.

About Khao Sok National Park

Khao Sok is covered by jungle that is considered the oldest evergreen rainforest in the world – older even than the Amazon. Huge limestone mountains peek out from the canopy, and the entire park feels ancient, wild and alive.

The park covers over 739 square kilometres and sits at the heart of the largest area of virgin forest in southern Thailand.

Cheow Larn Lake Tour: What Makes It So Special?

At the heart of the park is Cheow Larn Lake – a vast emerald green reservoir surrounded by dramatic limestone karst formations.

The scenery is exceptionally beautiful, with spectacular limestone pillars rising straight out of the water. It is often compared to places like Phang Nga Bay or Halong Bay, but with far fewer crowds, which makes it feel even more special.

What many visitors don’t know is that villages lie beneath the lake. The area was flooded in the 1980s to create a dam for water supply and hydropower, and entire communities were relocated. It gives the place a quietly haunting atmosphere alongside its natural beauty.

Another unique aspect is the floating bungalows scattered across the lake. These simple raft houses give you the chance to stop for lunch, relax, or even stay overnight right on the water.

Gliding across the lake on a traditional long-tail boat or kayaking through the still water with nothing but jungle surrounding you is so peaceful and dreamy. It’s unlike anywhere else in Thailand.

Wildlife in Khao Sok

Khao Sok is home to some of Thailand’s most impressive wildlife, including:

Tigers
Asian elephants
Macaque monkeys
Gibbons
Hornbills
Pythons and other snakes
Spiders (including some large ones!)

We were hoping to spot wildlife on our jungle trek but unfortunately didn’t see any creatures. Our guide joked that the locals had eaten them all during lockdown – typical guide humour! In all seriousness, early morning and evening are your best chances for wildlife sightings.

Best Time to Visit Khao Sok

Dry season: December to April – clearer skies, easier trekking, higher prices
Wet season: May to November – lush and green, fewer crowds, lower prices

From what I have read, Khao Sok is wonderful to visit at any time of year. We visited in August (wet season) and luckily for us it didn’t rain at all while we were there. The jungle is incredibly green and dramatic in the wet season, so don’t be put off.

Our Full-Day Tour: What to Expect

We booked a full-day tour that included a cave visit, kayaking, swimming, a jungle trek, and a buffet lunch. It was great value for money and a fantastic day.

Morning: Long-Tail Boat & the Cave

We set off by long-tail boat across Cheow Larn Lake – the journey itself is breathtaking, with the limestone cliffs rising dramatically on either side. We docked near a cave and took a short walk to the entrance.

Inside the cave, we saw bats roosting overhead and snake eggs on the cave floor. It was atmospheric and fascinating, especially for the kids.

Lunch: Floating Bungalows

After the cave, we returned to the boat and headed to a set of floating bungalows on the lake. Here we were provided with a delicious buffet lunch – genuinely one of the best meals of the trip.

Kayaks were available to use freely after lunch, and we could swim in the lake straight from the floating platform. The water was warm and the views were unforgettable.

Afternoon: Jungle Trek Up a Waterfall

After lunch, we trekked up a long, gradually stepped waterfall through the jungle. The rocks were surprisingly not slippery at all, which I hadn’t expected.

Our guide was brilliant – fun, knowledgeable and full of energy. He had us swinging on vines and wearing crowns made of jungle foliage. The kids absolutely loved it and so did us adults.

The whole day was fantastic – really fun, informative, and I would recommend it wholeheartedly to anyone visiting Khao Sok, whether you’re travelling with family or as a couple.

Floating Bungalows: An Alternative Way to Stay

As well as land-based accommodation, you can actually sleep on the lake in floating bungalows moored on Cheow Larn Lake. These are a truly unique experience – waking up surrounded by water and limestone cliffs with no road access.

They are more basic than the treehouse-style bungalows on land, but the setting is incomparable. If adventure is your priority, they’re worth considering.

FAQs About Khao Sok Tours & Cheow Larn Lake

Do you need to book Khao Sok tours in advance?

In most cases, you don’t need to book far in advance. Many hotels and guesthouses in Khao Sok can arrange tours when you arrive, and it’s often the easiest option.

However, during peak season (December to April), or if you’re visiting for a short time, it’s worth booking ahead to secure your preferred tour – especially popular Cheow Larn Lake day trips and overnight stays.

What is the best Khao Sok tour to do?

If you only have time for one experience, a full-day Cheow Larn Lake tour is by far the best choice.

These typically include:

A long-tail boat ride across the lake
A cave visit or jungle trek
Kayaking or swimming
Lunch at floating bungalows

It’s the perfect mix of scenery, adventure and relaxation – and was the highlight of our visit.

Is Cheow Larn Lake worth visiting?

Yes – absolutely. Cheow Larn Lake is one of the most beautiful places in Thailand.

The combination of emerald water, towering limestone cliffs and jungle scenery makes it feel almost otherworldly. Whether you visit on a day trip or stay overnight in floating bungalows, it’s an experience you’re unlikely to forget.

Can you visit Cheow Larn Lake without a tour?

It is technically possible to visit independently, but it’s not straightforward.

You would need to:

Travel to the Rajjaprabha Dam pier
Hire a private long-tail boat
Arrange your own itinerary

For most travellers, especially families or first-time visitors, a guided Khao Sok lake tour is much easier, better value, and far less stressful.

How much do Khao Sok tours cost?

Prices vary depending on the type of tour, but as a rough guide:

We visited with children and found the full-day lake tour to be a great balance of activity and relaxation. The kayaking, swimming and boat rides were particularly popular.

Cave visits may be dark or uneven underfoot

Guides are usually excellent at adapting to different abilities.

What should you wear on a Khao Sok tour?

Lightweight, breathable clothing is best due to the heat and humidity.

You’ll also want:

Comfortable walking shoes or water shoes
Swimwear
A waterproof bag
Insect repellent

What wildlife can you see in Khao Sok National Park?

Khao Sok is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including elephants, gibbons, hornbills and monkeys.

That said, sightings aren’t guaranteed – especially during the day. We only saw monkeys. Your best chance of spotting animals is on early morning treks or night safaris.
