We had no idea what to expect when we booked this historic hotel in Bath for a festive weekend visiting the Christmas markets. We were hoping for somewhere with character and period charm – and we completely lucked out with Grosvenor Villa.

The Fascinating History Behind Grosvenor Villa
Grosvenor Villa harbours a colourful past. Over the years it has been a private theatre for the Prince Regent (“and his naughty ladies”), a family home and later a B&B.
The original owner, Thomas Shew was an artist and architect. He extended his home to house the former altar piece from Bath Abbey, which stands proudly in the entrance hall today.
Thomas Shew also supervised the building of Bathwick Bridge – one of only 4 bridges of it’s kind in the world, inspired by the Ponte Vechio in Florence.
Tragically, after years of prosperity, a bad investment in Welsh coal mines led to Thomas’s financial ruin. He became a recluse, and according to the story we read, was eventually found hanging from an archway inside the villa.

We absolutely loved staying here, with its antique furnishings, elegant and homely atmosphere.
From the moment we stepped inside, we were gobsmacked. The grand entrance that houses the former Bath Abbey alter was so unexpected.
We were warmly welcomed by the owner, Richard, who gave us a brief history of Grosvenor Villa before showing us to our room.
Our bedroom featured a beautifully carved fourposter bed, an original fireplace and sumptuous furnishings.
It felt less like checking into a hotel in Bath and more like arriving at a private townhouse in 1790.
That afternoon, we walked into the centre of Bath along the canal – a peaceful and pleasant 20-minute stroll.

As we wandered along the towpath, I couldn’t help thinking of Jane Austen, who loved nothing more than to walk around Bath, enjoying nature and eavesdropping on whispered conversations.

Breakfast is served communally in the grand dining room around one large period table. It’s a lovely way to start the day – chatting with other guests while soaking up the atmosphere.
Our host, Richard served a continental breakfast and kept us entertained with hilarious (and occasionally slightly rude!) stories about previous visitors.
One of the things that makes this hotel in Bath stand out is the thoughtful extras. In our room we had:

Over breakfast, Richard retold the ghostly tale of Thomas and his sad end. There have been whispers of unexplained occurrences in the house over the years, and whether you believe in ghosts or not, it certainly adds to the atmosphere.
If you’re looking for a haunted hotel in Bath or one of the more unusual places to stay in the city, this will absolutely appeal.
Would I have slept as soundly if I’d read the full story before bed? Probably not.
