Why Visit Chichén Itzá on Your Mexico Trip
Chichén Itzá is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and an absolute must-do when staying in Playa del Carmen or anywhere along the Riviera Maya.
We found plenty of tours on Get Your Guide that looked great value for money, but on closer inspection realised they didn’t include the tax – an extra $42 USD.
Eventually we asked ChatGPT to help find us an all-inclusive tour – and to our surprise, it came up with the goods! We booked a full-day Chichén Itzá tour from Playa del Carmen and were amazed by how much was included for the price.
In this Chichén Itzá tour review, I’ll share exactly what to expect and what’s included.
Booking the Chichén Itzá Tour

Our Experience: Chichén Itzá Day Trip Itinerary
Pick-up and Transport
We were picked up early in the morning by mini-bus at a meeting point just round the corner from our Playa del Carmen accommodation. The minibus was comfortable and air-conditioned – nothing fancy, but perfectly fine.
We made a short stop at a service station, where our guide explained the itinerary. Our group visited the cenote first and Chichén Itzá after lunch – not the ideal order but it meant smaller crowds at both stops.
During the journey, our guide gave a passionate and fascinating overview of Mayan history and culture, even teaching us a few Mayan words and numbers along the way.
Stop 1: Sacred Cenote
Our first stop was Cenote Zahamal, about 10 minutes from Valladodid.
It’s part of a hotel and restaurant complex so the changing room and toilets were clean and well maintained.
The cenote itself is stunning – a deep natural pool, surrounded by cliffs, with a waterfall cascading down the rock face. A fantastic photo opportunity!
You enter via a steep wooden staircase or dive from a platform. Life jackets lockers are available for a small extra cost.
Note: Cenotes in the Yucatán Penisular are all interconnected, and the water is used by local Maya communities as drinking water. It’s important not to wear sunscreen and to shower before swimming.
Stop 2: Mayan Education Centre & Buffet Lunch
This was an unexpected highlight. We learned about traditional Mayan culture, crafts and spirituality – and even took part in a blessing ceremony.
The centre sells a wide range of locally made of souvenirs, with profits helping to fund school education for Mayan children. You’re not obliged to buy anything but we picked up a beautiful obsidian turtle, a symbol of fertility and motherhood.
Lunch was a generous buffet served in a dining room, accompanied by traditional dancers – a fun and memorable experience that felt both educational and entertaining.
Stop 3: Chichén Itzá Ruins
At the ruins, our guides split us into Spanish and English-speaking tours.
We had an hour-long guided tour with our excellent tour guide, who explained the history behind the main landmarks – El Castillo pyramid, the Great Ball Court, and the Temple of Warriors. Her stories about Mayan rituals and human sacrifice were fascinating.
Afterwards we had an hour of free time to explore on our own.
✨ Tip: Wear sunscreen, a hat and take plenty of water. If you are visiting in the afternoon, consider hiring a parasol at the entrance for shade.
Stop 4: Valladolid
The final stop was Vallodolid, a charming colonial town. The stop was brief – just enough time to watch traditional dancing in the park, admire the pretty church and grab a snack or coffee before heading back.
After a long but rewarding 12-hour day, we returned to Playa del Carmen exhausted but happy.
Tips for Visiting Chichén Itzá
- Bring water, a hat, sunscreen, and cash for souvenirs or tips.
- Wear comfortable shoes – there’s a lot of walking.
- Don’t forget your swimsuit and towel for the cenote!
Final Thoughts: Is the Chichén Itzá Day Trip Worth It?
For under 80 USD, this Chichén Itzá tour from Playa del Carmen was incredible value – combining history, culture, and a splash of adventure all in one day.
