Large Group Catamaran Tours
These are the most affordable and sociable option. Expect music, drinks, and lots of fellow travellers. They’re great if you’re after a party vibe, but not so ideal if you prefer a quieter experience.
My daughter came to Belize with GAD Adventures and joined in with a large catamaran tour. She says it was the best day out she’s’ ever experienced – and she’s had many!
The reason she enjoyed the day so much was not only seeing all the wildlife (including those allusive manatees) but also the relaxed party atmosphere and free flowing rum punch.
Small Group Eco-Friendly Tours
This is the style we chose. Small numbers mean fewer fins in the water, less stress on the reef, and more time for the guides to share their knowledge. Our tour only had 9 people on the boat – 2 family groups. Pairs and solo travellers were placed on another boat.
Private Boat Charters
For the ultimate flexibility, you can book a private boat. These are usually more expensive but perfect if you want to customise your stops. However, our guides allowed us to choose how our day went too.

Typical Tour Duration & Inclusions
Most tours last a full day (around 6-7 hours) with multiple snorkelling stops. Gear, park fees, water, and lunch are often included.

- Hol Chan Marine Reserve – a protected area teeming with coral and tropical fish 🐠
- Shark Ray Alley 🦈 – where you’ll likely see nurse sharks and stingrays gliding gracefully beneath you. (Don’t worry – nurse sharks are harmless!)
- Coral Gardens 🪸 – calm waters filled with colourful coral formations, ideal for spotting parrotfish and angelfish.

Small Group Size & Relaxed Atmosphere
Our boat had just a handful of people, which made the day feel personal and unhurried. No battling for space in the water – just time to float and enjoy.
Eco-Friendly Approach & Reef Conservation
What stood out most was Salt Life’s eco focus. They don’t feed the wildlife (which can be harmful), and the guides explained the importance applying reef-safe sunscreen at the right time and not touching coral, or kicking sediment over it.
Expert Guides & Local Knowledge
Our expert guides Josh and Chris knew everything about the reef and its marine eco-system. They were fantastic at spotting sea life – at one point they saw a dolphin in the distance and we all leapt off the boat as fast as we could pull our flippers on – to get a glimpse.
Food and Drink
Josh served us a delicious lunch and plenty of rum punch or soft drinks for the non-drinkers.
Safety & Care
I am not a strong swimmer and not experienced with snorkelling in rough sea water. At one point I felt that I was struggling and before I knew it, I had a guide with me – placing a life jacket and rope around me and pulling me to the boat. I couldn’t believe how swiftly they had acted.
After my little scare – I wore a life jacket and thoroughly enjoyed the day. Our guides ensuring that I kept close and saw everything. I really felt safe and taken care of.
Personal Highlights from the Day
For me, the whole day was just incredible – seeing all those amazing creatures in the wild was a bucket-list experience. I felt like I’d really pushed myself to do something out of my comfort zone.
If I had to choose one thing that absolutely stood out – it would be swimming close to the nurse sharks. Even though they are completely harmless – it felt unreal – being so close them.

Do I need to be a strong swimmer?
No – flotation devices and life jackets are available, and guides stay close by. Some stops have currents, so basic confidence in the water is helpful. I would advise to put the flotation device on straight away if you have any doubts.
What’s the best time of year for snorkelling in Belize?
Snorkelling is good year-round. The dry season (November-May) offers calmer seas and clear visibility, while the wet season (June-October) is warmer with fewer tourists.
We were snorkelling in July – the weather was a mixture of sun and rainstorms. At one point we had to swim through sargassum (seasonal seaweed) too.
Can I see manatees/turtles on the tour?
You are almost guaranteed to see turtles but not manatees. My daughter was lucky on her last trip but we were not on this occasion.
Are there toilets on-board?
No, the sea is your bathroom 🫢
What should I bring?
- Reef-safe sunscreen
- Towel and dry bag (very important – everything gets wet!)

- Rash guard or T-shirt for sun protection
- A top that covers you from the sun when you’re out of the water
