Welcome to Caye Caulker! The ultra laid-back Caribbean island in Belize. Expect sandy toes, chilled out vibes and magical up-close encounters with wildlife.
Apart from exploring the wonders of the Belize Barrier Reef – this tiny island offers you a chance to unwind and “go slow”, while sipping rum punch, eating fresh lobster and lazing around in a hammock.
Accommodation on the island is mostly Carribean style – boutique, timber framed and colourful.
We found almost everywhere is locally owned and there’s a great range for all budgets. However, Caye Caulker is a popular island so it’s best to book sooner than later to find a hotel that ticks all your boxes.
🌟 Tip: Be aware that check-in times usually finish very early around 7-8pm. If you are arriving late – make sure you contact your hotel well in advance to ensure they can accommodate this.
Where is Best to Stay on Caye Caulker?
North Or South?
Caye Caulker is literally split in two after a hurricane hit it in the 60s. The south side of the island is where you’ll find the action happening – when I say ‘action’ – I mean where most of the restaurants and hotels are.
The north side is much quieter and still very natural. We saw lots of building going on and I expect it will be much busier soon. The new renovations look upmarket – not sure that is a good or bad thing – but I liked the local community feel in the south.
Which Side – East or West?
The island is narrow so it doesn’t really matter which side you stay because everywhere is in easy walking distance.
However, if I was going to give a preference it would be the west for the sunset. Plus, the East side was covered in sargassum (seasonal seaweed) when we were there – and it can be a bit stinky! The west doesn’t get the seaweed.

Being so tiny, it doesn’t take anytime at all to scout out the best stays on the south side of the island. We had a good nosey around on-foot and online and spotted these gems for you to peruse – Enjoy!

Tropical Paradise Hotel – A Bargain Right on the Beach 7.8
A long-standing favourite with travellers, this hotel sits right on the beach. The pastel-painted wooden cabanas give you that laid-back Caribbean vibe, and there’s even a small pool to cool off in after a day of snorkelling.
With an on-site restaurant and bar, you don’t have to wander far for a cold Belikin beer.
My daughter stayed here on her first trip to Caye Caulker and she loved it!

If you love charm, this is the spot. Wooden cabanas painted in bright Caribbean colours, each with a porch overlooking a lush tropical garden – the perfect place to relax with a book.
Guests rave about the welcoming hosts who make you feel right at home.

This is where we stayed – and it couldn’t have been better placed. La Isla has a private beach area, a fire pit for chilled evenings, and a rooftop bar with fantastic views.
Rooms are spacious, bright, and come with fridges, TVs, and blissful AC. My son loved the super-comfy bed.
Coffee lovers will appreciate free morning coffee in reception.

This was our favourite place to watch the sunset – and we weren’t the only ones!
Iguana Reef has a gorgeous beachfront, comfy loungers, and the magical experience of seeing stingrays at dusk. The hotel residents have the best spot on the island (i.m.o. 😉)
