Our verdict: 8/10. The Fitnexa SomniPods 3 are a clever piece of kit – purpose-built for sleep, impressively effective at blocking noise, and the most comfortable sleep earbuds we’ve tested for side sleepers.
Unfortunately for both me and my husband, I’m a notoriously irritable and light sleeper. The sound of snoring (even my own) – or just the sound of someone breathing – is enough to keep me staring at the ceiling for hours (or fantasising about putting a pillow over their head 🤫). So when I was asked to try out the Fitnexa SomniPods 3, a pair of earbuds designed specifically for sleep, I jumped at the chance. Could these finally be the answer?
My husband, Dave, and I have both been road-testing them, so you’re getting two perspectives here – including one from a side sleeper with completely average ears, and one from someone (me) whose ears are so tiny that earbuds are basically my nemesis.

What Are the Fitnexa SomniPods 3?
The Fitnexa SomniPods 3 are sleep earbuds – but they’re more than just a pair of earphones you happen to wear to bed. They’ve been built from the ground up specifically with sleep in mind, combining hybrid active noise cancellation, a library of calming soundscapes, sleep tracking, and an ultra-slim profile designed to stay comfortable all night, even if you sleep on your side.
That last point is significant; most earbuds are designed for waking hours, not for eight hours pressed into a pillow. The SomniPods 3 address this with a profile measuring just 9.9mm thin and weighing only 3.3 grams per earbud – slim enough to stay comfortable when your ear is squashed against a pillow.

Who Are These For?
The obvious answer is anyone who struggles to sleep in noisy environments. But for travellers in particular, they are the answer to a multitude of sleep-depriving environments. Think:
- Light sleepers in hotels with thin walls
- Anyone who’s ever lain awake on a long-haul flight while the person next to them snored
- Hostel-dwellers sharing a dorm room
- Anyone whose partner could wake the dead
Dave and I have both been there. And these earbuds are now firmly in my travel bag.
The Noise Cancellation: Does It Actually Work?
Now for the technical part! The SomniPods 3 use a dual-microphone hybrid ANC (Active Noise Cancellation) system – combining feedforward and feedback microphones to cancel ambient noise in real time – with a claimed reduction of up to 42dB. There’s also adaptive ear-leak compensation, which detects if the seal shifts during the night (because you roll over, for instance) and automatically adjusts to restore the noise-blocking performance.
In practice? Dave found the noise cancellation impressive – particularly for blocking out the kind of low-level hum and ambient noise you get in hotel rooms and on planes. For me, even with my fiddly ears, I’d say they block sound more effectively than standard foam earplugs – and unlike earplugs, you actually get to listen to something soothing at the same time.

The App and Soundscapes
The Fitnexa app is where a lot of the magic happens – I really love this feature. It gives you access to calming soundscapes and white noise options to help you drift off, and you can set a timer so they automatically stop playing once you’re asleep. Three tracks – ocean waves, rain, and wind – are even preloaded directly onto the earbuds, so you don’t need your phone or an internet connection to use them. Handy when you’re in the air.
The app also tracks your sleep duration and stages using built-in sensors, and generates a Sleep Score to help you understand your patterns over time. There’s an AI sleep coach feature too, though this requires a subscription after an initial free trial period.
For core functionality – soundscapes, ANC, audio playback, and basic sleep tracking – you don’t need a subscription at all.

Comfort: The Honest Truth
This is where your experience may vary, and I want to be transparent about that.
Dave is a side sleeper, and he found the SomniPods 3 genuinely comfortable even when lying on his side for extended periods. The curved contours are clearly designed with pillow pressure in mind, and the slim profile means there’s no painful plastic edge digging in. For anyone who’s tried regular earbuds in bed and given up, this is a meaningful difference.
I, on the other hand, have extremely small ears. Earbuds – any earbuds – are a challenge for me. The SomniPods 3 come with up to 40 different fit combinations, using five tip sizes in two shapes (all medical-grade silicone), plus four ear wing sizes for stability. I tried the smallest size combinations and got to a workable fit, (I’m happily writing this now wearing the earbuds) though I wouldn’t describe it as “forget they’re there” comfortable. For me personally, the real draw is the soundscapes and the noise blocking rather than all-night wear – and even on that score, they outperform anything else I’ve tried.
If you have standard-sized ears, I suspect you’ll find them considerably more comfortable.

Battery Life and Practical Details
- Up to 6.5 hours in Sleep + ANC mode (longer if ANC is off, and the earbuds automatically reduce power once they detect you’ve fallen asleep) Personally, I’d prefer them to last a few hours longer, but in comparison, my AirPods don’t last anywhere near that length of time.
- Up to 48 hours total battery with the charging case
- 10-minute fast charge gives you 1.5 hours of use
- USB-C charging, with wireless charging also supported
- IPX4 water resistance – sweat and light splashes are fine
The charging case itself is solid and compact with a sleek minimalist design – exactly the kind of thing that earns its place in a travel bag without taking up too much room.
As Travel Earbuds
Beyond the sleep function, these work as regular Bluetooth earbuds for podcasts, music, and audiobooks – so they double up as earbuds for travel in the traditional sense too. The Hi-Res Audio certification and 10-band equaliser in the app mean the audio quality is respectable, even if it won’t quite rival dedicated audio-first brands.
For long-haul flights, the combination of ANC, calming sounds, and the auto-sleep-off timer makes these one of the more thoughtfully designed travel accessories I’ve come across. They’re not trying to be everything – they’re trying to help you sleep, and they do that well.
Verdict
If you’re a traveller who struggles to sleep in noisy environments, the Fitnexa SomniPods 3 are worth serious consideration. As sleep earbuds go, they’re purpose-built for sleep – and you can tell. The ANC is effective, the soundscapes are very relaxing, the auto-off feature is clever, and the slim profile makes them the most comfortable option we’ve tried for side sleepers.
For people with very small ears like mine, comfort may still be a consideration – but even I find value in them for the sound-blocking and the soothing audio. Dave, meanwhile, is a full convert.
Best for: Light sleepers, side sleepers, frequent travellers, anyone sharing a room with a snorer.
Worth knowing: Core features are free; the AI coaching subscription kicks in after a trial period.
