Many first worked in the logging industry before it was banned in 1989. Sadly, after the ban, most were then forced into tourism – giving rides for hours in the intense heat.
We met the herd at Bophut: Kham San, Cartoon, Khum Phean, Kaew Ta, Mae Kham Kaew and Kham Paeng.
Cartoon and Kaew Ta were both working on Koh Samui, giving rides to tourists, before being rescued by Koh Samui Elephant Sanctuary. Cartoon was very shy when she first joined the herd, but now she spends much of her day with Mae Kham Keaw. We even heard her calling out out to her friend while we there – incredible and genuinely moving to hear.
All of the elephants have deeply moving stories. You’ll hear about the lasting damage they suffered – malnourishment, scars, tooth damage – and both Kaew Ta and Mae Kham Kaew are blind in one eye.

Our Experience at Samui Elephant Sanctuary
We visited as a family of five and chose the 3-hour tour, which includes snacks and lunch.

We were picked up from our hotel by minibus and driven to the sanctuary, where we were warmly welcomed with refreshments on arrival.

Once we had mastered the technique we were then led around the sanctuary’s grounds meeting each elephant in turn, feeding them while respecting their space.
The elephants loved their treats! With their trunks, they gently took the food from our hands and placed it in their mouths – an absolutely magical experience.

Afterwards, we enjoyed a delicious vegetarian buffet lunch with fresh fruit and drinks. We had time to relax in the peaceful surroundings before being driven back to our hotel.
