Luckily, budget doesn’t mean bad in Istanbul. Many of its budget hotels are central, walkable and full of character.
In fact, some of the city’s most affordable hotels are also the best located, putting you within walking distance of iconic sights, buzzing food streets and excellent public transport.
This guide focuses on great locations first, because where you stay matters just as much as how much you spend. All of the hotels below are well-reviewed, first-timer friendly, and ideal for travellers who want to explore Istanbul without blowing their budget – whether you prefer the historic Old City or the lively streets around Taksim.
Best Budget Hotels in Sultanahmet & Old City (First-Time Friendly)
Why Stay in Sultanahmet on a Budget
Sultanahmet is a great location choice for a budget first time visit because you’re in walking distance of all the main sights like Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace and the Grand Bazaar. This is close to where we stayed and we found it ideal.
You can enjoy early morning access to attractions and safe, calm evenings.
Central hotels in Istanbul are fantastic value compared to other central stays across Europe and you’ll save on transportation costs too.
These hotel recommendations all have great reviews and excellent locations.

Best Budget Hotels in Taksim & Beyoglu (Great for Atmosphere & Nightlife)
Why Taksim is a good choice for first-time visitors:
Taksim and the surrounding Beyoglu neighbourhood give first-time visitors a chance to experience a more energetic and contemporary side of Istanbul.
At the heart of the area is Taksim Square, one of Istanbul’s main transport hubs, making it easy to get around by metro, tram or bus. From here, Istiklal Avenue runs through Beyoglu, lined with shops, bakeries, restaurants and historic buildings
We loved this colourful, lively area with great restaurants, cafes and bars. However, I have to admit, we were glad to be staying in the Old City away from the noise.
This area is great for younger travellers, couples, anyone who prefers nightlife and dining options.
Taksim is not ideal for everyone, it’s busier, noisier and depending on your fitness level can require transport to the Old City sights.
As it’s a noisy area, it’s difficult to find budget accommodation with great reviews but these two outshone the rest.
🏩 Stay Inn Taksim Hostel

One of the most popular budget hostels near Taksim Square and Istikal Avenue.
🌃 Best for solo travellers looking for a social, central base.
Located close to Taksim Square and Istiklal Avenue, this popular hostel is ideal if you want to stay right in the action. It’s lively, social and extremely central, making it easy to enjoy Istanbul’s nightlife, cafés and bars. Best suited to travellers who don’t mind noise and want an energetic atmosphere.
💗 Guests love the location and friendly staff.
⚠️ Very loud at night because of the nightclub adjacent – bring earplugs!

🏩 Union Hotel Port

A small boutique hotel with excellent reviews for value and comfort.
💗 Best for couples looking for a value boutique hotel
Union Hotel Port offers excellent value for couples who want something more polished than a hostel but still reasonably priced. Rooms are modern and comfortable, and the hotel consistently receives outstanding reviews for cleanliness and service. A great choice if you want boutique-style comfort near Beyoglu without paying premium prices.
💗 Guests love everything!
⚠️ Noise – poor sound insulation and located by a school so noisy for late risers.
