Things to Do at Los Rápidos

Bacalar is all about being close to nature and relaxing. At Los Rápidos you can slow down and connect with your surroundings:
- Float Down the Current – Rent a life jacket and let the gently current carry you downstream.
- Kayaking – Guests can rent kayaks and paddle their way up and down stream. It looked quite tricky to go against the current. We watched 2 people take about half an hour just to move 10 metres up stream, which was very amusing to watch.

- Swim in the Shallow, Crystal-Clear Water – You will find pools of water perfect for a swim. It is important to enter the water away in the designated entry points so you don’t damage the stromatolites.
- Relax in Hammocks or Sun Loungers – Relax and enjoy the peace and tranquility.
- Eat at the Cafe – Good menu for drinks, meals and snacks. (No picnics allowed).

We all had a wonderful time here. Everything from the natural beauty to the chilled vibe was incredible. We floated down the river countless times, swam in the natural pool, ate snacks and relaxed on the sun loungers.
This is a place for relaxing in nature and drifting along the current. If this isn’t your thing – then you might think twice about coming here.
🌟 Tip: It is best to arrive early before the busiest time of day
Guide to the Stromatolites and Ecology

🌟 Did You Know? Stromatolites are 3-billion-year-old living fossils – older than dinosaurs!!
What Are Stromatolites?
I had never even heard of stromatolites before our trip to Bacalar. When you see them, you might mistake them for huge rocks in the water but they are actually three-billion year old, ancient, living lifeforms – a bit like coral.
Stromatolites are very delicate and can be easily damaged by people stepping on them or harmful chemicals found in sunscreens, make-up and insect repellent. They are extremely rare and need our protection.
Why Bacalar Is Special for Stromatolites
Stromatolites are usually found in saltwater so Bacalar’s stromatolites are unusual. The lake is connected to the underground river system that cenotes are part of, which is great for the stromatolites and helps them to grow. Unfortunately, this river system and lake is under threat from urban development and tourism.
How to Visit Los Rapidos Responsibly
I cannot stress enough how important it is to follow these guidelines. Even though there are signs everywhere, I saw people stepping on the stromatolites.
I was so sad to see people ignoring the signs, which is why I want to stress this point. If you love Bacalar, please help to protect it.
🌎 How you Can Help to Protect the Stromatolites:
- No sunscreen, make-up or insect repellent in the water (the chemicals bleach the stromatolites)
- Don’t touch or step on them (if the surface is punctured – they die)
- Avoid kicking up sediment (do not wear fins)
- Stay in Eco-friendly accommodation
- Cross the lake with paddle boats and sailing boats – avoid engines

Combining Los Rápidos with Other Bacalar Activities
It’s best to arrive at Los Rápidos early before it gets too busy.
You can combine your visit with nearby Cenote Azul and Cenote Cocalitos. Or, an afternoon sailing tour across the lagoon?
I would suggest a morning at Los Rápidos, lunch at the cafe, and afternoon sailing tour or cenote swim.

❓FAQ
Is Los Rápidos worth visiting in Bacalar?
Yes – Los Rápidos is one of the top attractions in Bacalar. The natural lazy river is perfect for floating, kayaking, and swimming in crystal-clear water. It’s also one of the best places to see stromatolites, the ancient living fossils that make Bacalar unique.
How long do you need at Los Rápidos, Bacalar?
We spent 4 hours at Los Rápidos, which is usual. This gives you time to float down the river several times, rent a kayak, enjoy a swim, relax and have food at the café. You could also spend a full day here if you love being in the water.
Is Los Rápidos suitable for children?
Yes – children can enjoy swimming in the shallow pools and floating with a life jacket. However, the current can be strong in some parts, so supervision is essential. We saw families with young children enjoying the sun loungers and calm sections of the river.

Outside food and drinks are not usually allowed as there is an on-site café serving meals, snacks, and drinks. It’s a good idea to bring a refillable water bottle, but check the latest rules when you arrive.
