Introduction to European City Breaks

If you’re craving a quick getaway after a long winter, spring is one of the best times for a European city break.

Temperatures are milder, the sun starts making a welcome appearance, and most destinations are far less crowded than during the peak summer months. It’s also often a great time to find good-value flights and hotel deals, especially if you travel outside of school holidays.

Over the years, we’ve taken quite a few European city breaks in spring. It’s one of my favourite times to travel – comfortable sightseeing weather, café terraces opening up again, and cities full of colour as parks and markets come back to life.

In this guide, I’ve shared some of our favourite European city break destinations, along with ideas for things to do and typical prices for a 3-day trip from the UK to help you plan your own spring getaway.

Prices were researched using flight comparison sites like Skyscanner and hotel platforms such as Booking.com. As always with travel, prices fluctuate depending on dates and availability, so treat these as rough guide prices rather than fixed costs.

All costs were researched on Skyscanner and Booking.com. Prices are approximate based on recent searches in 2026 and may vary depending on travel dates and demand. Should you choose to search for your break on the affiliate links in this blog, and find a deal that suits your requirements, I will earn a small amount of pocket money at no extra cost to you, enough to buy me a cup of coffee.

Straddling two continents, Istanbul is one of the most fascinating cities in the world, where Europe and Asia meet across the Bosphorus.

Spring is a fantastic time to visit. Temperatures are comfortable for sightseeing and the city’s famous tulip season brings colour to parks and squares across the city.

About Verona

Often overshadowed by nearby Venice, Verona is one of the most romantic and charming cities in northern Italy.

Best known as the setting for Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the city is filled with beautiful piazzas, medieval streets and historic buildings. It’s smaller than many Italian cities, which makes it perfect for exploring over a relaxed long weekend.

We visited Verona in April last year and loved how atmospheric it feels – especially in the evenings when locals gather in the piazzas for aperitivo and the city takes on a golden glow.

Spring is a wonderful time to visit Verona. The weather is warm enough for outdoor dining and the crowds are far smaller than in summer.

Activities for a Spring Break in Verona

Visit the impressive Verona Arena, a Roman amphitheatre that is even older than the Colosseum and still hosts opera performances today.

Stroll through Piazza delle Erbe, the lively heart of the city, and climb the Lamberti Tower for panoramic views across Verona’s terracotta rooftops.

Cross the beautiful Ponte Pietra bridge and wander the narrow streets of the historic centre before finishing the day with an aperitivo in a local wine bar.
