What to pack for Thailand Holiday – Introduction

Whether you are staying at a beach resort, jungle or city, what to pack for your Thailand holiday is covered in this comprehensive list. The one thing you can be sure of is the weather will be hot and humid. If you stick to loose fitting, natural, light-weight fibres you will find it more comfortable in the heat. It is best to stick to comfortable footwear too.

There are different types of mosquitos including ones that are about in the day so wear insect repellent at all times. The sun is very strong so even on cloudy days protect your skin with sunscreen.

Documents / Financial Essentials

  • A few months before your trip, check if you need a visa, and that you have 6 months left on your passport from the date you intend to leave.
  • If you are driving you may need an International driving permit.
  • It is a good idea to download ‘Google Maps’ on to your phone and ‘Grab’ Taxi App.
  • Buy an E-sim beforehand or a Sim card at the airport when you arrive.
  • Bring your debit/credit card (let your bank know you are travelling) and some currency (Baht) or withdraw some at the airport on arrival.
  • Make sure you have good travel insurance, proof of your onward travel and a copy of all relevant documents with you.

Packing for a Thailand Holiday:

Unless you are staying at a 5 star luxury hotel, the dress code is generally casual and you won’t need to bring many dressy clothes to Thailand. In the evening, women tend to wear light weight dresses and skirts and men light cotton tees or short sleeved shirts, trouser or shorts.

What to pack for a Thailand Jungle stay:

The jungle is hot and humid and there are lots of insects. There’s a fair chance it will rain and you are likely to get wet trekking up waterfalls, kayaking or visiting caves. Plan to get hot, wet, lots of walking and a high chance of an insect bite.

I wore some Craghopper leggings and top with built in insect repellent. I had no bites and felt comfortable and dry. After a waterfall trek my clothes dried quickly too – see links below.

You will need:

  1. Swimwear
  2. Light weight top that covers as much skin as possible, preferably with built in insect repellent (try Craghoppers, link below)
  3. Light weight long trousers or leggings, preferably with built in insect repellent (try Craghoppers, link below)
  4. Shorts
  5. Tight knit socks or hiking socks
  6. Walking sandals or light weight walking shoes or trainers

What to pack for a Bangkok /city stay:

Bangkok is a fairly conservative city and you are likely to visit religious places like temples. I would recommend taking temple clothes that cover your shoulders, knees and ankles. Long shorts are not accepted at temples and men will need to wear trousers, women trousers or long skirt, or dress.

Pack for Thailand city – female:

  1. Tees / blouse
  2. Shorts or skirts
  3. Long light weight trousers or skirts for temple
  4. Light weight top that covers the shoulders and midriff and is not low cut.
  5. Dress for evening
  6. Sandals or light weight shoes / trainers

  2. Shorts and trousers
  3. Sandals or light weight shoes / trainers

Essential items to pack for a Thailand Holiday

  1. Travel Adaptor plug (A,B,C and F outlets) phone, charger

  3. Toiletries / personal hygiene items
  4. Prescription medication
  5. Insect repellent (50 % Deet)
  6. Bite / sting relief cream
  7. Imodium / Electrolyte powders
  8. Paracetamol /Ibuprofen
  9. Plasters / Antiseptic cream
  10. Handwipes / Sanitiser

  12. A small back pack to carry water bottle, camera, etc
  13. Light rain coat, small umbrella

There are lots of clothes stalls and laundrettes in Thailand and most hotels provide a laundry service so there is no reason to overpack. We managed two weeks with just a cabin bag each.

It is best to take your own sunscreen because the sunscreen in Thailand is expensive and often has a bleaching agent built in. You can buy insect repellent at any 7/11 and it is cheaper and superior to the repellents bought in the UK.

Sometimes language can be a barrier and that is why I suggest you take these few First Aid items and your own toiletries and personal hygiene items.

Check all the rules and regulations on the official Thai website to ensure you don’t miss any vital rules or documents:

Stay calm and enjoy your trip

Other than vital documents like your passport, Thailand has everything you need available to buy there, so do not worry too much about forgetting something, it will be fine. Have a fantastic trip!
