Wondering Where to Stay in Athens For Your Trip?

When we planned our stay in Athens, the main feature we wished for was a view of the Acropolis. Not necessarily from our room but at least from a rooftop terrace so we could enjoy a glass of wine and admire it. And of course – we wanted great amenities and to be close to all the sights.

Planning a trip to Athens is exciting, but choosing the right place to stay can be daunting, especially when you are not familiar with the areas. With countless options scattered across the city’s historic neighborhoods, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.

To simplify your decision, I’ve meticulously researched, read hundreds of reviews and curated a list of accommodations that not only fit various budgets but also offer stunning views of the iconic Acropolis.

Whether you’re seeking affordable comfort, boutique charm, or luxurious indulgence, this guide has you covered.

Where to Stay in Athens: Best Areas For First Time Visitors

The main areas that are close to the Acropolis are all within easy walking distance of each other. Whichever area you stay in, rest assured you can spend time in all these places and experience the character and charm unique to each one.

🌟 Tip: The Acropolis is on a hill so if you have mobility issues, you might find it easier to take a taxi to the entrance.

📍 Plaka

The oldest area of Athens, Plaka is steeped in historic charm and is steps from the Acropolis. Meandering pretty streets and pathways, dotted with step tavernas – it is extremely picturesque.

📍 Monastiraki

Very close to Plaka and the Acropolis, Monsastiraki has a vibrant square, a handy metro station, an amazing flea market and nightlife. We stayed here and we were very happy with our choice.

📍 Koukaki

Close to the Acropolis but with more of a local ambiance, Koukaki is a hip neighbourhood with an eclectic mix of cafes and bars.

📍 Syntagma

At the very centre of Athens, Syntagma is the central hub with excellent transport links. It is home to Syntagma Square where you can see the changing of the guards outside of parliament. You will find the most luxurious hotels and the main shopping street Ermou.

📍 Psiri

Attracts a young trendy crowd with its vibrant nightlife, dining and entertainment. It is one of the liveliest neighbourhoods in the city.

Where We Stayed

We stayed in Monastiraki – a perfect location to be close to all the sights, the metro, restaurants and bars and we had a fantastic view of the Acropolis from the rooftop.

The only downside is it can be a little noisy at night but it didn’t go on past 11pm. Athens is a busy city and it is usual to hear noise. I have picked out hotels that have less complaints about this.

All of the hotels in this list have superb review ratings 9++
