Introduction to Les Gets and Family Fun

We have been visiting Les Gets with our children and their grandparents for over ten years. The reason we come back is not only the huge variety of stunning ski slopes and pretty picturesque village that is Les Gets, but all the unique things to do that can include the whole family.

This family friendly resort has so much to offer; including a central, outdoor ice rink and a thrilling, alpine roller coaster. From snow shoeing and hiking, to luxury spa experiences, plus fantastic local cuisine and wine at welcoming family restaurants. You will find everything to be easily accessible, within easy reach by foot or the free, excellent bus service.
In this article you will find a whole range of family après ski activities available in Les Gets, with guidance, website and google map links – enjoy!
Top Family Après Ski Activities in Les Gets
Alta Lumina Experience

Take an enchanting night walk through the forest. Experience the magical lights and music to ignite your children’s imagination.
Alta Lumina is a night walk experience created by Moment Factory. You walk through 1 km of captivating lights and music, following the journey of the music-maker in his hot air balloon.

We absolutely loved this experience, it was so mesmerising and beautiful. Guests have the option to buy a hot drink and warm themselves by the fires, overlooking the lake before they enter. We enjoyed a cup of mulled wine. The walk took an hour from when we reached the site and you can stay longer. It was a magical experience and one we strongly recommend.
There is not a ticket office on site at Alta Lumina. You can order tickets on the website (see below). Showings vary according to the season, depending on what time it gets dark.

Getting to Alta Lumina
There is an Alta Lumina free bus service from the Market Car park in the centre of Les Gets, which runs every 15 minutes. Google Maps Link
Or, from the resort entrance at the Perrières car park.
If you wish to drive, there is a car park near the entrance. We saw a few people walking but the road on the way is dark and busy, so I wouldn’t recommend this with children.

Alpine Roller Coaster

This exciting coaster ride is accessible whilst you are skiing, or as an après ski activity. A perfect activity for thrill seekers, the alpine coaster climbs up the mountain and has a vertical drop of 104 meters. Riders can sit in carriages alone or in pairs, and have control of the break. Enjoy the adrenalin rush as you speed along the track up to 40km/h, twisting and turning.
We are all thrill seekers and unanimously voted this ride as a fantastic experience.

Children from 3 years can ride with an adult, and children from 8 years can ride alone. You can pay at the cash desk or simply load your toboggan passes onto your lift pass card.

Getting to the Alpine Roller Coaster
You can access the ride either by skiing down to Les Perrières; (it is fine to go on with your ski boots). Then you take the chairlift up the mountain after you have finished. Or, you can get there by foot, bus or car – all of which are free.

Ice Skating at the Les Gets Rink

Situated in the centre of Les Gets, directly in front of the Tourist Office, is the outdoor ice skating rink. This real ice skating rink is a popular activity for families visiting Les Gets.

The hours vary according to the school holidays but it opens at 10-12 in the mornings and mid afternoon till 7pm, or 10pm in the holidays. Only 2.50 Euros for children, including skate hire.
My children loved to skate here often and at such a great price they could come whenever they wished.
Tenpin at Bar Bowling

Another fun thing to do in Les Gets, for all the family, is to have a game of tenpin bowling. Bar Bowling is a great bar with funky neon lights, a nice atmosphere and friendly staff. It has 2 lanes, pool tables and a dart board. The bar sells well priced drinks and plays great tunes.
It is very family friendly and situated in the centre of Les Gets, so easy to get to. It is very popular so be sure to reserve your lane.
You can reserve your lane by calling them on +33 4 50 79 87 77.

Enjoying the Sledging Slope and Outdoor Soft Play Area

You will find lots of slopes around Les Gets suitable for sledging and play areas around the slopes and resort. For little ones, there is a great sledging area at the front of the slopes next to Chavannes.
Just through the Tourist Office is also an outdoor soft-play area for toddlers.

Mechanical Music Museum

An interesting introduction to the world of mechanical music – it is like stepping back in time. The Mechanical Music Museum offers more than 750 exhibits. If you do the guided tour, you get to listen to the mechanical instruments. The tour is in French but you can still listen to the music. If your children enjoy pressing buttons, they will love this interactive experience.

A note to English speakers, everything is very much geared to French speakers (just so you are prepared). You are given a guide in English to help you follow the tour.

Although the Cinema is advertised as showing films in French, we observed that there are often films shown in their original language with French subtitles. Find opening times on the Les Gets website.

Family-Friendly Dining Options

Les Gets has many excellent, family friendly restaurants, with children’s menus and baby changing facilities. Dining in Les Gets is a wonderful experience and there are plenty of choices offering French and International cuisine. It is best to make reservations in advance. Below are a few recommendations of our favourites.
La Fruitière des Perrières

For a fantastic fondue experience, La Fruitière des Perrières is a family run restaurant. They make their own cheese and have done so since the beginning of the last century. You can even take part in a cheese making demonstration (see the Les Gets Tourist website).

The service and food are exceptional. From the welcome drink on arrival, you will have a unique and memorable evening.

La R’Mize

Located in the old village, La R’Mize is my personal favourite. They offer traditional French and Savoyard cuisine and wonderful, warm service. We enjoyed snails, duck, tartiflette and their delicious signature dessert.

Le Tyrol

An old family favourite of ours. Le Tyrol has a lovely, wooden traditional setting and a warm and cosy atmosphere. They offer Savoyard specialities, as well as wood fired pizzas and Italian dishes. We come here every visit.
